Chopped Canada "Disheleved Until Dessert" Recap (1/16/14)

January 17, 2014

Chopped Canada

Thursday's episode of "Chopped Canada" featured Chef Daniel Janetos, Chef de Cuisine & Managing Partner of Canapés; Chef Patrick Vasiliauskas, Chef de Cuisine at L'Atelier d'Argentine; Shelly Robinson, Executive Chef at Delta Sun Peaks Resort; and Johan Maes, Chef de Cuisine at Le Petit Déjeuner.

The chefs are tasked with making an Appetizer, Entrée, and Dessert using mystery basket ingredients. Each round is timed. The chef whose dish the judges like the least is Chopped. (same format as the American version) Each of these talented chefs are competing for a chance to win $10,000 and the title of Chopped Canada Champion.

For the Appetizer Round, the ingredients consisted of Fred Chow Mein Noodles, Dill Pickles, Rack of Lamb, and Dandelion Greens.

Daniel: Chow Mein Crusted Lamb with Dandelion Two Ways
Patrick: Jerk Lamb Chops with Herbette Salad
Shelly: Petit Lamb with Warm Vinaigrette
Johan: Lamb Chop with Chow Mein Pickle Reduction

Chopped: Chef Johan. The judges were not impressed with the execution of his dish. His pickle reduction sauce split.

The Entrée Round featured Grape Leaves, Pork Shoulder, Dried Chipotle, and Green Peppers. The chefs have 30 minutes to create/plate a dish.

Patrick: Grape Leaf Pork Shoulder with Basil Sorbet
Shelly: Grilled Pork Steak with Grape Leaf Salsa
Daniel: Pork Ragout with Crispy Grape Leaf

Chopped: Chef Patrick. The judges felt that his plate was incomplete. The most important component of his plate did not make it.

The Dessert Round called for the chefs to use Couscous, Gin, Grapefruit, and Molasses.

Shelly: Couscous Fritters with a Grapefruit Salad
Daniel: Couscous Rice Pudding with Macerated Grapefruit

Chopped: Chef Daniel. The judges agreed that his Dessert was delicious, but the meat in his Entrée Round was inconsistent.

Winner & Chopped Champion: Chef Shelly

Opinion: Although the format of the show is the same as the American version of Chopped, it is rather dry. The chefs talk too much about their life struggles and the judges barely crack a smile. The host Dean McDermott is stiff and needs to show more personality. So far not a fan.
