Chopped "Teen Talent" Recap (12/10/13)

December 11, 2013

Tonight's special episode of "Chopped" featured the following four Teen Chefs: Hunter Zampa, Simona Alomary, Roxy Belfiore, and Matthew Wheelock, each competing for a chance to win a $40,000 culinary scholarship. These talented chefs ranged in age from 13 to 16 years old.

For each round, the teen chefs were allotted 30 minutes to cook and plate their dishes for the judges.

For the Appetizer Round the teens were tasked with creating a dish using Swordfish Steaks, Broccoli Rabe, Tiger Figs, and Cherry flavored drink.

Hunter: Pan Seared Swordfish & Pickled Tiger Figs with Cherry Drink Broccoli Rabe
Roxy:  Seared Swordfish & Broccoli Rabe with Cherry Reduction Sauce
Matthew: Asian Marinated Swordfish & Sautéed Broccoli Rabe
Simona: Mediterranean Swordfish with Sweet and Sour Broccoli Rabe

Chopped: Roxy. The judges felt that the cherry reduction sauce was too thin and the fig was not prevalent enough in the dish.

In the Entree Round the teens faced a mystery basket which included Toaster Pastries, Filet Mignon, Black Truffles, and Heirloom Tomatoes.

Hunter: Pan Seared Filet Mignon with Fried Heirloom Tomato Salad
Simona: Grilled Black Pepper Filet Mignon & Sweet Tomato Salad
Matthew: Spiced Fillet with Heirloom Tomatoes & Toaster Pastry Panzanella

Chopped: Matthew. The judges felt that the toaster pastries were not integrated into the dish properly.

The Dessert Round featured a mystery basket full of breakfast items: Salt Bagels, Cream Cheese, Cotton Candy Grapes, and Strawberry Mints.

Simona: Molten Amaretto Brownie with Cream Cheese Frosting & Grape Raspberry Salad
Hunter: Cream Cheese Ice Cream with Grape Mint Compote.

Chopped: Simona. The judges did not like her overcooked fish in the Entree Round and in the Dessert Round one of the key ingredients, strawberry mints, were not included in the dish.

Chopped Champion: Hunter Zampa. He received a $40,000 scholarship

Roxy & Matthew each received a $5,000 scholarship and a $1,000 gift card
Matthew also received an internship courtesy of Marcus Samuelson

Simona received a $20,000 scholarship.
