Top Chef "Rebuilding New Orleans" Recap (10/9/2013)

Wednesday's episode of Top Chef begins with the chef’s first QuickFire of the season. For this QuickFire, Padma informs the chefs that they will cook a Louisiana classic, gumbo. However, each chef is tasked with placing their own spin on the classic recipe. The chefs are sent home to start cooking their gumbo overnight and given an additional 15 minutes to finish their gumbo off in the Top Chef kitchen. 

Guest Judge and Local Legend Chef Leah Chase will choose the winner. The winner of this Quickfire Challenge wins Immunity from Elimination.


Upon return to the Top Chef Kitchen the chefs each serve their Gumbo to both Padma and Chef Chase:

Chef Michael serves a Drunken Chicken Gumbo
Chef Shirley serves a Braised pork belly & Mexican Rice Gumbo
Chef Janine serves an Australian coconut milk Curry Gumbo
Chef Aaaron serves a Hot & Sour Asian style Gumbo
Chef Justin serves a Pork Rib & Okra Gumbo
Chef Patty serves a Puerto Rican Mofongo style Gumbo
Chef Bret serves a New England Fried Clams and Miami inspired Gumbo
Chef Carrie serves an Iowan-Trinidadian green mango Gumbo
Chef Carlos serves an Albondigas Chipotle Gumbo
Chef Jason serves a Polish Cabbage & Beet Gumbo
Chef Nina serves a Plantain and Yucca based Gumbo
Chef Louis serves a Moroccan lamb shank Gumbo
Chef Sara serves a Crab and Silken Tofu Gumbo


Chef Leah Chase expresses her dislike with Chef Jason’s Polish inspired Gumbo, Chef Michael’s Drunken Rice Gumbo, and Chef Patty’s Puerto Rican Mofongo Gumbo. Chef Leah Chase seems to really enjoy Chef Carrie’s Gumbo. She is the winner of the Quickfire and awarded Immunity from Elimination.


Padma informs the chefs of their next Elimination ChallengeA Food Truck challenge. Chefs are divided into four teams (Yellow, Blue, Green and Red) and must work together to create a menu to feed the volunteers of Habitat for Humanity.

The Yellow Team members are Aaron, Carlos, Travis, Carrie, and Brian.
Food Truck Concept: Taco Truck
Menu: Dorado and Shrimp Ceviche (Travis & Brian)
          Beef & Pork Curry Empanadas (Carrie & Aaron)
          Tilapia Tacos with chipotle aioli and cabbage (Carlos & Aaron)
            

The Blue Team members are Jason, Patty, Nicholas, and Bret.
Food Truck Concept: Seafood
Menu: Salmon Hand Roll with Quinoa, Honey Mustard Miso and Cucumber (Jason)
          Coconut Ceviche with Red Snapper and Bay Scallops (Bret)
          Tuna Slider with pancetta, avocado and tomato (Patty)
          Grilled Shrimp with Melon Sungold salad and wasabi peas (Nicholas)



The Green Team members are Louis, Sara, Shirley, and Stephanie.
Food Truck Concept: Mediterranean
Menu: Crispy chickpeas with watercress and radish salad (Stephanie)
          Tuna Burgers with sprouts, avocado and watermelon (Sara)
          Spicy grilled lamb salad with cucumber and Asian pear (Shirley)
          Chilled watermelon spears (Louis)


The Red Team members are Justin, Bene, Michael, and Nina
Food Truck Concept: Flavors of South Florida and Southern United States
Menu: Green Gazpacho with pickled shrimp (Janine)
           Lobster and Crab Fritter with corn puree (Justin)
           Jerk Chicken sandwich and crispy plantains (Nina & Bene)
           Ricotta with Burnt Honey, Stone Fruit and Toasted Coconut (Michael)



Judges Table: The Winning team is the Yellow Team (Aaron, Carlos, Travis, Carrie and Brian)
Chef Carrie Wins Again! The judges love her Empanadas.


The Losing team is the Blue Team.  The judges decide to eliminate Chef Jason for his “soggy” Salmon Roll dish.


Next week: The chefs are faced with their first Quickfire Elimination.
