Chopped "Extreme Halloween" Recap (10/6/2013)

Sunday's Episode of "Chopped" featured four culinary chefs battling for the coveted title of Chopped Champion and $10,000. Chef Terri Whal, owner/chef of Auntie Em's Kitchen in Eagle Rock; Chef Isaiah Fizzel, owner/chef of Pheast underground supper club in LA; Sharon Singleton, owner of Singleious Catering in Staten Island, N.Y.; and Chef John Creger, head chef at Gallow Green in NYC faced mystery baskets filled with Halloween "tricks and treats."

The Appetizer Round mystery basket consisted of Eel, Black Licorice Bat Candies, Coagulated Pigs Blood, and Canned Potato Crisps. Chef Sharon made a Rice Noodle Bowl with Pig's Blood, and  Sautéed eel. Chef John made Brûléed Eel with a Black Bat Candy Licorice Sauce. Chef Isaiah made Canned Potato Chip Congee using Dashi. Chef Terri made Fried Eel coated with canned Potato Crisps.

Chef John was Chopped by the judges for serving raw eel.

In the Entrée Round, the mystery basket ingredients consisted of Sweet Breads, Dehydrated Weaver Ant Eggs, Green Gummy Skeleton Head Candy, and Collard Greens. Chef Sharon made Collard Green Hash, Weaver Ant Eggs Potatoes and Pan Seared Sweet Breads. Chef Isaiah made Deep Fried Sweet Breads with a Green Gummy Sauce. Chef Terri made Pan Seared Sweet Breads over Collard Greens and Potato Pancakes.

Chef Isaiah was Chopped because his sweet breads were undercooked.

The final two chefs, Chef Terri and Chef Sharon were left to reckon with Pate Sucree, (French term for a sweet short crust pastry used to make tarts) Deviled Eggs, Gel Candied Blood, and Buffalo Chestnuts in the Dessert Round. Chef Terri made a Crepe with a sweet custard filling made of Pureed Deviled Eggs and Sautéed Pate Sucree. Chef Sharon made a Pate Sucree Sugar Cookie with Deviled Egg Yolk Icing and Sugared Buffalo Chestnuts.

 At the judge table, each chef was criticized for flaws in their dishes. Chef Sharon was criticized for her dessert being way too sweet and Chef Terri was criticized for her raw pate sucree filling and sloppy execution.

After deliberation, the title of Chopped Champion was awarded to Chef Sharon.
